JOSEPH IRBY literally grew up in the horizontal infrastructure business. As a student, he worked on the construction crews during the summers, and after joining the company full-time, he served in the roles of project superintendent, manager of operations, and ultimately as leader of the powerline construction portion of the Irby family enterprise. He also served as a director and advisor in preparation for the $425 million (CPI adj.) sale of the Irby companies which continue to grow and prosper.
Under Joe’s leadership, Irby Construction became the nation’s most profitable powerline construction company, completing projects from south Florida to Alaska and southern California to New England. Joe was instrumental in establishing the Department of Labor approved Lineman Apprenticeship Program, obtaining long-term maintenance contracts, and obtaining engineering, procurement, and construction contracts for the first time in the company’s history.
In advising contractors building horizontal infrastructure, Joe draws on timeless business principles gleaned from his grandfather and father that laid the foundation for the Irby Companies and combines that with his knowledge of best practices gleaned over a 40-year career as a contractor, educator, entrepreneur, and start-up executive for 2 powerline construction divisions,
